I speak as an Imperial medic and tbh I do think there is a stark difference between the type of doctors produced. I’ll explain below (please note these are generalisations and do not speak for every student from the respective university): https://twitter.com/ch0rd0t0my/status/1291663180150837248
Oxbridge places a huge emphasis on clinical knowledge. Generally their knowledge about even the most niche aspects of medicine are highly impressive. But wrt to their bedside manner, although incredibly polite, can be a tad awkward, and they often lack in the area of comm skills.
Imperial is a highly academic university. Research is encouraged + praised from early on, accounting for the large number of AFP applicants. We don’t have as thorough knowledge base as Oxbridge sadly, but comm skills are better - cont
Though I personally feel that many Imperial medics need to do a lot more work in improving their comm skills and EQ. The empaths at Imperial are the ones who tend to fare well wrt bedside manner and building patient rapport, but some students are too academic to have that insight
Out of the 4 universities, I think UCL is the one that really produces the most well-balanced doctors. Sure they may have slightly less thorough knowledge base in niche topics than the other 3, but it’s still vast enough. Comm skills tend to be better too
If I may say so, I honestly feel that NON-Oxbridge/UCL/Imperial medics make the best doctors, with much better comm skills and kinder personalities, having not developed a superiority complex.
They have less toxic and competitive environments than these “Top 4” med schools so their mental health is generally better+they have engaged in more extra-curric activities. This means they are better equipped to cope with the demands of being a doctor and are more well-rounded
I know I’m going to offend a lot of people with this thread but that wasn’t my intention! Tbh I could write an entire essay on my observations of these 4 unis but twitter isn’t the place 😂 sending love
