Making my first return to Shetland since the start of the pandemic - glad to get around and talk to people about how the community is starting to recover from #COVID19 . Thread: 1/
On the approach to Busta House. Communities in the north end have had a difficult time of late - closure of Scatsta, changes at Sullom Voe, the Moorfield fire to name a few. Good to spend (socially distanced) time talking to local tourism businesses about challenges they face. 2/
The view from @StMagnusBay Hotel in Hillswick. It's not all doom and gloom - the Eat Out to Help Out scheme is proving to be more successful than anyone dared to hope. It's short term but is helping here and now. We have some of the best food and drink to be found anywhere. 3/
After speaking to management at some local hotels I managed to swing past @FrankiesFish in Brae for a takeaway lunch. I usually go for their award-winning haddock and chips but in the heat of the day (and as a treat for myself) I opted instead for their pan-fried scallops. 4/
The challenges facing Shetland (and Orkney) are immense and will need a plan designed here to get us through. What is clear from talking to people all over the isles is that if there is political will, our communities are ready to put the work in to recover strongly. ENDS/
