Korea really made a black man apologize for calling out students for wearing blackface for graduation photos.
Sam Okyere, a Ghanaian television personality, expressed his feelings about the coffin dance meme parody photo on Instagram on Thursday that wearing blackface is offensive. But after online pile-ons, he deleted the post and had to issue an apology for “crossing the line.”
Some of the biggest talking points in defense of the students have been that 1) the original coffin dance guy approves, 2) It wasn’t malicious and 3) Blackface is only offensive in countries where it was used as a racist tool (US for instance). 🤦🏻
BTW Sam never withdrew his criticism of blackface and the graduation photo. His apology is specifically about sharing the photo of the students without permission and some of the words he used in the post, so to his credit, he didn’t fully cave into the pressure.
