Schumpeter was woke on elite over production in 1942 (more aptly ‘intellectual over production’, he is referring to the educated intellectual class)
I’m still reading it, but I think that this phenomena of an excessive production of intellectuals is meant to contribute to the eventual downfall of capitalism for him, though there is more to it (this is his “Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy” btw).
This is not quite the same thing as the actual technical Turchin ‘elite over production’ to be clear and he clarifies he doesn’t mean every white collar job, even elite ones It is about public intellectual types. So a lot of journalists, actually. But not lawyers generally
Btw I appreciate his treatment of Marx in this book, I felt like I was getting a measured analysis from a ‘bourgeois economic’ perspective that had both high praise and the obvious criticisms. Did a good job explaining Marx’s relationship to Ricardo too.
