The GM only fills in holes.
I'm tired, so maybe this is dumb. But ultimately I wrote this for "Under The Hood" because it feels like the skeleton that most every other Basic™ PbtA move I usually see is draped over… which, if so, I think means that move isn't enough to bother differentiating from this one.
I haven't actually played anything PbtA yet. (I hardly get to play anything ever. 😔) But one thing that's always stuck out is while PbtA seems to ultimately rely on less rules, you need to be way more vigilant about triggering moves. It sounds cool on paper, but my ADD says "😬"
I struggle with M:TG because I have to keep rereading what the cards in my hand say, plus what all the cards on the field say, and then synthesize all that together into meaning. That takes a lot of working memory, something my ADD is low on. Watching for 14 moves feels the same.
So, if you're gonna bother making a move for a game, you better damn be sure it FUNCTIONS differently than other moves. Otherwise, you're making the players have to sift through more info, using brainpower on rules they could be using on playing. Different paints doesn't cut it.
At least, not for me. Obviously PbtA is massively popular. However, I still can't help but wonder if there isn't more tinkering we can do to our games' gears to engineer in more inherent character without having to list 30 details. It's about accessibility, really.
