i feel like. most people who at least read through some of the history of hawaii would see why there is so much respect and appreciation for the culture here. (i’ll [try to] put a ❗️ next to bits i think are rly important if u dont want to read through the whole thing)
rq though here is an AMAZING ❗️thread❗️ about hula from @daeguud thank you sm for making this and all of your other informative threads https://twitter.com/daeguud/status/1291536453114007552
i’m just. brushing through a few history things but did you know ❗️hula used to be banned in hawaii? protestant missionaries came to hawaii in 1820 and denounced many hawaiian practices as heathen. after converting many hawaiians (including the queen (Ka'ahumanu) at that time+
+hula was banned in 1830. it was illegal to perform hula in public places. after her death in 1832, people began to ignore this rule, and when Kalakaua became king in 1874, he officially declared that hula could be performed again.+
+ however in 1887, the king was forced to sign the ❗️bayonet constitution at GUNPOINT, which stripped the monarch of much of its power in favor of white business men (took away native hawaiian land rights and gave the vote to foreign landowners). +
+❗️queen Lili'uokalani rose to power after the death of Kalakaua in 1891, and she worked to create a replacement constitution to restore power to the monarch and the natives of hawaii. ‼️however conspirators worked against her, eventually setting up a provisional+
+government. over 120 u.s troops arrived with firepower/ammunition and set up camp a few hundred yards from the palace. Lili'uokalani had made the decision to yield her authority with the belief that the us would restore her to power after being presented with the wrongful+
+actions of the authority. president grover clevelend was actually against the annexation of hawaii (which was the goal of the conspirators), and urged that the monarchy be restored after a ❗️u.s commissioner deemed the overthrow illegal.+
+however, the conspirators’ provisional government disregarded that, and instead established a republic of hawaii in 1894. cleveland did not want to use military force to oppose the conspirators, and supporters of the queen had launched a counter-revolution.+
+this led to several deaths, over 350 arrests, and the queen was forced to abdicate the throne. ❗️she spent nearly eight months imprisoned in the palace, and even traveled to the united states for support (unsuccessfully). +
❗️the queen (+native hawaiians in general) was portrayed as uncivilized and savages through racist caricatures/political cartoons like these. she was very much well educated and amazingly talented, composing/writing over 165 songs in her life time, including Aloha 'Oe.
***‼️also the hawaiian LANGUAGE was banned in instruction and government following the overthrow, and this prohibition was not officially lifted until 1986. please RESPECT the language
in 1898, the spanish-american war broke out and hawaii suddenly became a place of strategic importance for the united states. cleveland’s successor, mckinley, was in favor of annexation, and hawaii was annexed july 12, 1898.
native hawaiians are still facing issues of marginalization today. losing rights to land, facing discrimination etc. hawaiian is an official language in this state, and oftentimes speakers are still not given the domain to speak their language (ie official matters such as court)
ran out of space but ‼️‼️^
that’s kind of all i have to say since my thoughts are a bit of a blur but please respect the culture and history of hawaii. please do not ignore misrepresentation of the culture and other instances if cultural appropriation. yes hawaii’s culture is beautiful. please respect it.
also if you read through this whole thing thank you. here’s a rly informative video about hula + it’s connection to the hawaiian language if anyone’s interested :,>
❗️❗️ HI I FORGOT TO ADD i am NOT native hawaiian but i was born and raised here. the education system makes incorporating hawaiian hist/culture mandatory(?) throughout k-12 education so i (and many others) grew up learning this stuff. if you are native hawaiian/local and noticed
