My Listening-to-Hip-Hop Story
Quick thread!

Just doing a quick self-absorbed thread about what hip hop albums I listened to as a kid, and other essential albums & artists that played a major role in how my journey into new sounds progressed.
AS A KID
It all started with Bomfunk MC’s when I was very young. Eastern-European electronic music with TERRIBLE lyrics, and a weird imitation of hip hop with “cool American terms”, DJs, breakdance & graffiti. But I was a stan, and they’re the reason I wrote bars as a young kid.
The most important “actual” hip hop artist from my youth must’ve been EMINEM though - he was to everyone at that time. I’ll never forget all the kids hanging out to listen to MMLP daily, in the basement of the only dude in school actually allowed to own this controversial gem.
Aaand the first hip hop record I ever personally purchased - a compilation record from OutKast! I actually bought it because I liked Hey Ya!, but bumped this one all day either way.
EARLY TEENS
Guitar Hero ruined everything. All of a sudden I only listened to rock, and was gonna become the greatest guitarist of all time to get some pussy. So, not really any essential hip hop from my early teens…
(MID- TO) LATE TEENS
Despite loving hip hop as a kid, XXX by Danny Brown was the record that really changed everything. Hearing this opened my ears to all the amazing music that must’ve been out there, really starting my dive further into music. And it instantly ignited my love for hip hop again.
Finally digging through the endless catalogue of hip hop, I of course stopped by the classics. This also lead to the first really social/shared hip hop-listening experiences since MMLP. Every day, just driving around bumping NWA, 36 Chambers and more. No turning back now.
If XXX was the project that started it all for real, The Cold Vein is the album that changed my view on music as a whole. I had never been this blown away by music before, and because of this record, I dedicated the next decade to music. Deltron 3030 also played a role in that.
The first years dedicated to music (studying it, living it). Man, I miss those years. El-P’s music might’ve been my main influence, but a Wu-Tang VS. The Beatles mixtape and the DANGERDOOM record really helped me find my style, with a true love for sampling.
EARLY 20s
After the first years, I didn’t listen to many new records; I played tons of music by eXquire, because it resonated with me. But most of the music listened to during the next years was my own music, music from collaborators, and local talents who inspired me beyond words.
My exploration headed more in the direction of D’Angelo etc. But the most important projects were still hip hop; “The Hypnotic”, “Solace”, a Nujabes mix and BoBS were essential companions through the worst times of my life. These mean extremely much on a more private level.
Aaaand the latest additions; I somewhat got out of my depression, and a lot of that has to do with two artists I underestimated for years; Q-Tip & Dilla, now my biggest inspirations and influences.

1/2
Throughout my years exploring and creating music, I finally found the music that really clicked; that had what I’d always been looking for. Two artists perfectly capturing what I wanted out of music.

2/2
The end. If this was interesting at all to anyone; thanks!
