These two iconic mecha series that on the surface level have really nothing in common are really sister series that are closely intertwined. It first starts off with the boys over at Studio Gainax.
After numerous failed projects in the late 80s Hideaki Anno struck a collaboration deal with King Records, they wanted something to fill a time slot on TV. Hideaki Anno took up the project and thus was born Neon Genesis Evangelion.
One of the most influential and polarizing anime of all time would bring the studio from the brink of ruin to making over 100s and billions of yen from a single show. This is all important because a young Key Animator was working on the project Imaishi, Hiroyuki.
Imaishi is the creator of TTGL has many similarities to it's sister series that came before it. A young boy lives in a terrible environment that they are pushed out of by a person that they will deify. The world is put on his shoulders and he's forced to fight robots from above.
Using a badass giant robot that is powered by his spirt that's stolen from the enemy it culminates into an heartfelt speech that's known as one of the best endings ever this sound familiar? These two works complement each other in many ways, where the difference is the approach.
NGE deals heavily with grief, depression, trauma, etc with the perspective of the cast not knowing how to fight these issues till the last few episodes. Contrarily GL takes the more optimistic route saying that you not only have to fight back it's that you have an obligation to.
Both are incredible all time works that really work well together but I most often see TTGL being down played as "less intelligent" or "lacks substance" which is simply not true. Sure TTGL is inherent absurd and is way more straightforward in its approach but its just as great.
GL message is to not sit in despair and just go on living it's to get fucking mad and fight that shit it you win. It's incredibly cartoonish but it makes a lot of sense. Both NGE and GL mean the world to me I believe they made me who I am. It happens that they're closely related.
