I worked at Angels stadium for 3 years. I was in that clubhouse everyday. Tyler Skaggs was one of the most amazing human beings I have ever met. He hid his addiction well. I can say that because he was never high at the ballpark. Hard for people to know if they don’t see it.
Tyler was the type of person to see you 2 decks up while he’s exercising on the field and whistle for you to come down and talk to him. We had a previous friendship from the times he would visit NFL Network where I was the lighting director. We would talk for sometimes 30 minutes
He never looked high. Pupils never dialated. I have 2 aunts that struggled with addiction. I can spot it. Never saw it. What happened to Tyler is so very sad. Because it shouldn’t have happened. He made poor choices. But he was not a junkie. Far from it.
Which brings me to Eric Kay. Everyone is naturally going to hate him. Thinking he’s the guy that killed Tyler. I had a good relationship with Eric. He was the guy who knew everything and everyone. He was a great guy too. A lot of people used to wonder how I knew so much about
what was going on before it happened. Angels Twitter used to say “who’s your source?” Well it was Eric. He would send me a message and say “Your boy Bridwell is getting called up”. He genuinely cared and loved the players. I can’t excuse what he did. And I’m not defending his
actions. What he did was wrong. But learning he had an addiction too was strange for me. How do you work so closely with people and not know? Could I have paid attention better and spotted it? Everyone wishes they could go back in time. But all you can do is move forward.
The only thing I want this story to do for the fans is to know. Every and when I say every I mean every single person in that Angels organization is A+. An isolated situation that I guarantee not a lot of people knew about should not affect our view of the great people inside
that stadium. The culture there is so inviting and genuine. People really care for one another and love what they do. It really is a family. We all have things in our family we’re not proud of and hope to learn from. This is no different. I wish everyone there nothing but the
best. And I hope whatever comes out in the future does not stain the great work they all have done. God Bless you all.
P.S. Mike Trout is the real deal. What you see is what you get. A humble, gracious human being. Best baseball player to ever live. But a better man.
