Worth revisiting how eerily similar Australia is culurally to how it was in 1997. Only (some) of the names have changed. https://twitter.com/alisoncroggon/status/1291732262308818945
When I wrote ‘The Boomer Supremacy’ I revisited a Gangland ten-year anniversary article from 2007. It had quite a long list of new cultural voices that could break through.
I went through that list, on the Gangland twentieth anniversary. Almost every single person on it had written one book, and then nothing else.
I started contacting them. They hadn’t ‘failed’, but none has anything like the cultural cut-through of the generation before. What had happened?
The answer was the same every time: mortgages. Taking on a house and/or family was totally prohibitive of writing books, or writing or doing anything creative.
Even those people had university jobs, or arts jobs, or other income streams to buoy them. Those are about to be gone as well.
