There was plenty to do, but I wanted to add a pet project, other than the big meeting and the challenge of multiple societies doing the planning (I tried to take the flak sometimes, like from Canadians who took issue with fees all in US dollars, in their own country, ha). ...
Support for students and giving a hand are main interests for me, even now, with the cooperation of my university and for example ESBC. So I proposed a Student Conference Travel Fund for ESC to begin in 2000. Starting with dollars from me would be slow, so creativity was needed.
So... I took on an experimental research test of a new sustainable product for control of Colorado Potato Beetle. I covered ground costs, the aerial applicator threw in free time, and the very understanding funding company agreed to send the full $2200 fund to ESC...
... for the new Student Conference Travel Fund, received and kindly deposited by Treasurer Gary Gibson. There is not much noteworthy in this story so far except for the field assistance. I could not do a field-scale test in irrigation pivots alone. ...
So my son Sam helped, and donated his pay to the ESC fund. An engineering student, saving for his own university costs, worked for nothing to help entomology students. Thanks, Sam, for not even noticing how generous you are. That's one of the best moments of 2000.
