So many things I could type write now about Covid-19 and data and leaders. One thing seems to be standing out more than anything to me. Many, MANY districts have been working long and hard on plans and backups. Some seem to have done little and bad decisions forced on them. 1/
“Experts” seem to be controlling the narrative. Here is the difference between Harvard and UNMC. Harvard = everyone should be in school. UNMC = no one. Think about that. That’s A LOT of smart people. Really smart. (Even if they block me for asking questions.)
What is mind blowing here, to me, is UNMC puts report out in late July. We needed it long before that and we had data. If you believe what you believe why weren’t we pushing hard to scale back in June and early July. This would have been crucial.
Because the numbers — I post again for full effect — say we NEVER HAD A CHANCE. Ever. Thank goodness some school leaders worked with local health departments BEFORE this report for a solid plan. One school leader to me: “We aren’t using that (UNMC) chart.”
We still have “experts” (and school board decision makers) leaning on death data from Germany. That’s not happening here. Simple fact. Nebraska at 1.22%.
Here is that same person in May saying we’d have 500 deaths by mid-June. Should we do the math again? I WANT to trust the experts. Really, I do.
I am sick to my stomach for OPS kids right now. Sick that the leadership isn’t allowing them in class learning, activities (band and play and speech and drama are important, too) and sports. Many kids have just had life altering effects happen to their lives.
We had time to change this outcome for them with planning by school leaders. There is no doubt in my mind. Instead we go political with this pandemic on both sides. Here are the results.
March: 374 positives, 3,103 tests, 3 deaths, 12.05% positive. “Not really sure what to do with this virus yet.”
April: 3,622 positives, 22,218 tests, 65 deaths, 16.32% positive. “15 days to flatten the curve.”

May: 10,111 positives, 75,821 tests, 102 deaths, 13.33% positive. “Need more testing!!!”
June: 5,137 positives, 77,015 tests, 99 deaths, 6.67% positive. “Need more testing STILL. Wear a mask!!”

July: 6,724 positives, 92,799 tests, 59 deaths, 7.24% positive. “Mandate masks!!! Not getting better it’s worse!!!”
The situation was IMPROVING and school leaders were not PLANNING! Shame on them.
