Feeling motivated to document just how unacceptable connectivity to the LA River Path is, focusing on access to the northern stretch from the west bank. Grab a helmet (you'll need one) and follow along. (1/11)
Let's start at the northern end. The path gets you within spitting distance of Zoo Drive, but first you have to deal with Riverside. The gate on the western side is closed, so coming off the path you have to make an uncontrolled left and cross the 5 on-ramp. (2/11)
While the northern section was closed this was the furthest you could get. Who doesn't want to cross ramps for two different freeways to get into a park? (3/11)
Further down there is a tunnel under the 5 that gets you into the park. It might be technically for horses only but it is the only way to get from the path to the park without biking on a road. (4/11)
The Los Feliz entrance is so ludicrous that it barely even warrants discussion. Trying to get to the entrance of the park here is death-defying. (5/11)
This bridge to the tennis center is fine, but from there you're stuck in a sea of terrifying roads. (6/11)
I think this entrance was built as a joke. It connects you to Hyperion and Glendale right at a 5 on-ramp. (7/11)
I typically get on the path here at Fletcher. If the city just built a bike lane on Fletcher this would be functional. That's apparently too much to ask, though. (8/11)
I'm skipping over Frogtown, where the path fortunately has quite a few connections straight into the neighborhood. (9/11)
Finally, the bridge at the southern end. This connects to Figueroa and San Fernando, both of which desperately need bike lanes. Ave 19 is the safest connection here and still isn't great. (10/11)
So there we have it. The LA River Path is an amazing resource... once you're on it. LA is building new crossings and working to close the gap to the southern section, but none of that addresses the fundamental access issue. We have a beautiful path that you can't get to. (11/11)
Forget high-quality infrastructure - there are no striped bike lanes connecting to the path!
