the university has not democratized power—elite colleges still dominate as they did a century ago—but what it has done is lend legitimacy to the disintegration of social fabric under the guise of social mobility

but ultimately, of course, credentials cannot mask collapse
basically what we did was create a massive nationwide sorting mechanism in anticipation of millions of New Economy jobs which turned out not to exist
I’m going to write this up eventually but basically it seems that America has simultaneously witnessed a hyper-consolidation (of elites, managerial power, labor demand) and a disintegration (of society, the state, mediating institutions, family)
