I think its important that people know a bit more about who the author of the 1619 project is. She is patronizing to teachers who don't want to teach in class in the fall. When Biden made his "if u dont vote for me u aint black" she defended it saying you can be racially Black 1/ https://twitter.com/nhannahjones/status/1291459493264580611
while not being "politcally Black" as if the politics of Black people is a monolith? If you listened to the 1619 project and learned from it that is totally valid, but you must remember that as a writer for NYT she is part of a weathy group that benefits from capitalism so her 2/
writing can never truly challenge the status quo. The NYT ultimately is a neoliberal institution that benefits from the current world order. 1619 presents many brutal realities of slavery, but fails to mention that slavery was ultimately made for CAPITALIST BENEFIT. So much of 3/
systemic racism is a product of capitalism. Chattel slavery was a means to increase profits by using free labour. Capitalism has been used as a force to oppress Black people for ages. Being paid less for the same work, making higher education inaccessible, redlining, are all 4/
intersections of where racism is used for capitalist purposes (benefitting the wealthy, which is mostly white.) You could also say its capitalism used for racist purposes. The point is racism and capitalism intersect at so many points, its useless to write about the history of 5/
racism in America without bringing up capital. (Id like to note here that while deeply connected, not all racist acts are connected to capitalism, e.g. lynchings, but many things affecting everyday life are connected). Anyway that's why i have a problem with the capitalist NYT 6/
reframing history. I mean it's better than how US history has been taught in the sense that it doesnt celebrate SLAVEOWNERS but ultimately it doesnt threaten the staus quo of the wealthy and fails to look at how class is weaponized against Black people and combined with racism.
So yeah thats my rant idk how well i express myself please lmk ur opinion maybe i can better explain some parts in replies. Basically i dislike the author because she is a proponent of the capitalist system that has beaten down many people but especially Black americans.
