Thinking about female anger today. TROS Rey feels so ooc because her anger is misplaced. She's abruptly angry for no reason that most women relate to. JJerrio must have heard that women liked TLJ Rey's anger, but, like many men, not understood female rage as a whole.
There are many male writers who DO understand it. Who see a situation that would anger THEM and give their female characters the privilege to be angry the way society often punishes women for. And then, there are many male writers who don't understand it.
Rey is angry- why? The last emotion she expresses to Kylo in TLJ is disappointment, and we understand why. She wanted him to turn, to be better, to join her and for them to not be alone. Alas, she was wrong, and while she is accepted as a member of the Resistance, we see that she
still feels alone- she watches with yearning Finn care for an unconscious Rose, she looks helplessly at her lightsaber, broken in two, symbolic of her dyadic connection because the two of them remain separated. It's with resolution and grief that she lets Kylo know that they will
remain separated. In TROS? She's just angry. We don't know why, but every time she sees her literal soulmate, she's mad. She never expresses why. Is her anger the result of his insistence to remain on the Dark Side? She doesn't say that- to him or anyone. She's. Just. Mad.
And this is kind of emblematic of how many men see female anger- sound and fury, signifying nothing. I've heard the defense that it's her darkness coming out, but as many MANY women have said, the idea that female anger is 'darkness' while male characters are allowed to be angry
without such a designation is infuriating on its own. Not all anger is considered a sign of the Dark Side in SW, and to simplify her as just angry and therefore dark is very weird in a series that devoted three movies to how Anakin became driven by anger and hate.
I guess it's just TROS sad hours again.
