It's another Friday evening, so lets have a look at the coronavirus data for Devon and Cornwall, and after three weeks of cases rising, the number of newly confirmed cases in the last seven days has fallen - with today seeing no new cases confirmed
The figures show that 32 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 41 new cases confirmed last week.
It means an average of 4.57 cases a day across the two counties are being confirmed, compared to 5.88 last week. Torbay is seeing an average of 0.2 cases a day confirmed, Plymouth 0.85, with 1.85 cases a day in the Devon County Council area, and 1.57 cases a day in Cornwall.
The number of confirmed cases in Cornwall has nearly halved in the last week, going from 19 to 11, in Torbay the numbers have dropped from 5 to 2, but in Plymouth there has been a small rise from 5 to 6, while across the rest of Devon, cases rose from 12 to 13
Across the Devon County Council area, of the 13 cases, 5 were confirmed in East Devon, 2 in Exeter, Torridge and West Devon, and one in Teignbridge and Mid Devon, with no cases confirmed in North Devon or the South Hams
Of the 32 newly confirmed cases, 17 of them have occurred by specimen date since July 31, with 8 in Cornwall, 1 in Plymouth, 1 in Torbay, and 7 across the rest of Devon. The remaining 15 cases occurred prior to July 31, with the most ancient being back on July 12 in Teignbridge
By specimen date, the most recent case in Cornwall, Torbay and West Devon was August 4, in Torridge was August 3, August 2 in Plymouth, August 1 for East Devon, July 31 for Exeter and Mid Devon, July 27 for North Devon, July 25 for Teignbridge, and July 19 for the South Hams
Across the whole of the South West, 111 cases have so far been confirmed for the previous seven day period, of which, 38 of them are from Swindon alone. Only Swindon, Bristol and Wiltshire of the 29 regions are averaging more than 2 cases a day
In terms of cases by specimen between July 27-August 2 and reported by August 5, there was no Middle Super Output Areas across Devon and Cornwall that had three cases confirmed, with every other areas reporting between 0-2 cases - so no 'outbreaks' reported anywhere
Now the data for Scotland and Wales is listed alongside England, Torridge remains the place in England with the lowest overall positivity rate, but falls to 3rd in the overall table behind Na h-Eileanan Siar (Outer Hebrides) and the Orkney Islands
Including Scotland and Wales as well, the South Hams is 7th, North Devon 9th, West Devon 10th, East Devon 13th, Teignbridge 14th, Cornwall 15th, Exeter 20th, Torbay 29th, Mid Devon 49th and Plymouth 52nd of the 369 regions
In total, Torridge has had 56 positive cases, West Devon 74, with 98 in the South Hams, 122 in North Devon, 211 in Mid Devon, 215 in Teignbridge, 227 in East Devon, 250 in Exeter, 284 in Torbay, 679 in Plymouth and 939 in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
In terms of the number of people in hospital with COVID-19, in the South West, this has fallen to just 17 - the lowest figure yet - and is down on the 20 as of July 31. There is just one patient currently in ICU in the South West
The last death in a hospital in Devon and Cornwall occurred on June 29, although the latest ONS figures did show three new deaths - one in the week of July 18-24 (week 30) in Plymouth, and two in West Devon - one in a care home and one at home backdated to week 28 and week 26
The R Rate for the South West is still being estimated as between 0.8 and 1.1, which is the joint highest in the country, but it covers a large geographical area and low case numbers mean the estimates is insufficiently robust to inform policy decisions.
It's now 5 weeks since pubs reopened, and while there has been a small increase in the number of cases, it is only by around half an extra case a day pre-July 4, in a region of two million people a day, and there no areas where any 'outbreaks' or cluster of cases have occurred
And still, not to say it won't happen, but in Devon and Cornwall, no reports yet of any pubs, restaurants, hotels etc having had to close due to a positive case being reported, and by now, any significant immediate impact from the July 4 reopening would be apparent
In terms of the new cases we are seeing, they tend to individual cases with 1/2 cases maximum confirmed per region on a day rather than any bigger numbers, so no signs of clustering of cases yet, and no major outbreaks anywhere to be concerned about
Still need to be vigilant, but the reopening of the hospitality industry hasn't yet had any significant impact and while there has been a small rise, the number of cases still remain very low. Not to say it won't as more people go out, visit etc, but it hasn't happened yet
Usual caveats apply about these only being the reported cases, but covers anyone who has had a test and tested positive. May be (probably is) others out there with covid but no symptoms, but obviously unless you get tested, there isn't going to be any data around
The cases confirmed in the last week have dropped (and are dropping by specimen date as well), and around 4 cases a day are being confirmed across all of Devon and Cornwall - more than 2 million people - and they are not translating into deaths or hospitalizations
Certainly no threat of any 'local lockdowns' or anything of the sort for Devon and Cornwall, particularly given the decrease in the number of new cases confirmed in the two counties in the past week compared to the previous week (and 1/4 of the cases were confirmed on August 1)
Numbers have continued to drop in recent days with none confirmed today - whether that will continue to be the trend, we will have to see over the next few days - but the fear of tourists bringing coronavirus with them or hospitality opening causing a spike hasn't happened yet
After three weeks were there was a small rise in the number of cases, good to see that the numbers confirmed and by specimen date dropped this week - so have to say that this has been a very good week for Devon and Cornwall
Saturday's figures show six new cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall. Three in Cornwall (two from August 6 and one from August 4), one in Plymouth (August 4), one in East Devon (August 4), and one in the South Hams (August 4)
