Thread: Everyone is writing about #HIPAA now - what it means, how it applies, is it two “Ps” or one? I noticed that reporters and pundits new to the issue were sometimes getting the wrong information. It seemed there had to be a better way to do this. 1/
I decided post a list of women who are truly the experts on #HIPAA and health data access and are who you turn to if you have questions. Yes, there are men who are experts as well, but this is a perfect time to give the women who have led in the space their due. 2/
It starts off with Joy Pritts - she is the original Chief Privacy Officer for HHS/ONC and one of the key thought leaders in the space. When she speaks on #HIPAA, #HITECH and healthcare it is a source of true authority. 3/
Deven McGraw ( @healthprivacy) was Dep. Director for Health Info Privacy at HHS/OCR & a key player in modernizing elements of #HIPAA from the inside. She’s now at @Ciitizen, but she’s an important online resource for #HIPAA questions over at @healthprivacy. 4/
@SavageLucia followed Joy as CPO at HHS/ONC & has the corporate perspective from her time at UHG & now at @omadahealth she's a worthy follow. 5/
If you need a source currently in government, start with Kathryn Marchesini ( @PrivacyJD). She’s the current CPO for @ONC_HealthIT doing double duty with time at @HHSOCR. 6/
Also on the agency side, Linda Sanches is Sr. Advisor for @HHSOCR on Health IT and Privacy; there is no one with more experience and knowledge inside of government today. 7/
In the current Administration, former CareSync founder Amy Gleason ( @ThePatientsSide) now plays a critical role @USDS; she’s had more on-the-ground experience with #HIPAA than anyone you will meet. 8/
In the law firm world, @JodiDaniel & @mayauppaluru at @Crowell_Moring are pioneers in helping startups and others deal with #HIPAA and other burdens. 9/
@mayauppaluru drove the effort to open access to your health data as part of the White House’s Digital Service & @JodiDaniel was the founding Director of ONC-HIT, spending more than 15 years at HHS. 10/
Former HHS attorney Sylvia Trujillo spent nearly 14 years as Sr. Counsel for the American Medical Association before taking joining @CompAndChoices. Sylvia works on how #HIPAA impacts all those involved in end of life care. Her understanding of regulatory impact is supreme. 11/
For the perspective of care providers, Laura Hoffman ( @LGH_dc) leads @AmerMedicalAssn’s work on #HIPAA and brings an academic eye to the current situation both for patients and doctors. 12/
This is by no means an exhaustive list but a way to give credit to these leaders in health privacy and bring some gender parity to expert sources for media. Please share this thread and If you have any #womeninHIPAA you’d like to add, please reply or use the hashtag. 13/13
