An important change in today's @statcan-eng LFS release, it is providing estimates on the racialized population. I believe this a result of activism and the attendant increased awareness about #racism in Canada. On vacation with a slow internet connection, so bear with me:
These estimates are for the population 15-69, are not seasonally-adjusted. They compare the white population and racialized population and includes a breakdown for larger racialized groups. Some regional data is available. These estimates do not include the Indigenous population.
Some headline numbers: the unemployment rate was 16.2% for racialized Canadians as compared to 9.3% for white Canadians. The racialized unemployment rate is almost 75% higher.
The unemployment rate for Black Canadians was 16.8%. For South Asian Canadians it was 17.8% and for Arab Canadians it was 17.3%. Both Black (18.6% vs15.1%) and South Asian women (20.4% vs 15.4%) had significantly higher unemployment rates than Black and South Asian men.
As a measure of the impact of COVID-19, @statcan-eng compared the year over year differences between July 2019 and July 2020:
The unemployment rate for white people increased by 4.4 %age points over that period. It increased more for racialized Canadians: those who identify as South Asian 9.1%age points, as Chinese 8.4 %age points, as Black 6.3 %age points and as Filipino 6.3 %age points.
The Daily notes that 1 in 5 Black Canadians and almost 1 in 4 Filipino Canadians are employed in health care and social services. That might contribute to the smaller increase in the unemployment rate for those group.
Fin for now, more to come
