1) THREAD: The 2019 Joint Report on Multilateral Development Banks’ (MDBs) Climate Finance was released yesterday. I look at how this finance has changed over time and what is being targeted post-2020 by the MDBs👇 @ADB_HQ @WorldBank @EBRD @AfDB_Group @EIB @AIIB_Official @the_IDB
2) All the MDBs have seen an increase 📈 in their climate finance as a % of their total operations 👏

3) But the MDBs recognise that climate finance needs to be higher still and they have all set some form of post-2020 climate finance target 👇
4) Some MDBs include fossil fuel finance as climate finance - when looking at OECD project level data. The MDBs use a joint methodology for tracking climate finance, this allows some fossil fuel switching & efficiency improvements
5) Now, let’s look at the post-2020 climate finance targets across the MDBs🔍. Some have set a percentage of total operations target and some have set an absolute ($) climate finance target. This makes comparison tricky – see bank by bank below.
6) The @EIB and @AIIB_Official have the highest climate finance % target - set at 50% of total operations by 2025. The @EBRD has the equivalent target for green finance. Whilst the @WorldBank target of $200Bn between 2021-2025 represents a large increase.
7) The climate finance target at the @AfDB_Group is $25Bn between 2021-2025 ($5Bn annually), a large increase compared to 2019.
8) Next, the @ADB_HQ has a climate finance target of $80Bn between 2019-2030 or around $7.2Bn annually.
9) The @AIIB_Official has an ambitious climate finance target of 50% of total operations by 2025.
10) The @EBRD reports green finance & climate finance. The green finance target is 40% of total operations by 2020 and 50% of total operations by 2025.
11) The @EIB also has an ambitious climate finance target of 50% of total operations by 2025.
12) The @the_IDB has a climate finance target of 30% of total operations by 2020. This target turns into a finance floor between 2020-2023
13) The @WorldBank has a climate finance target of $200Bn between 2021-2025, ($40Bn annually). This includes private capital mobilised by the World Bank Group.
