An opportunity to learn for those who are willing.

Ever heard of Operation Reinhard? Approximately 1,470,000 Jews were slaughtered in a three-month span.

That’s 1,470,000 of the estimated 5,800,000 Jews who were taken from their homes and killed.

This article also talks about how genocide continues in our planet.

“Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur, Burundi, Syria, and Myanmar have all experienced large-scale murder operations in the last 25 years.”

Hate anywhere is hate everywhere, especially in the tech/social media world.
Taking a knee during the anthem to bring attention to police brutality and systemic racism isn’t disrespecting our troops or our country. Peaceful protest is synonymous with being an American, and it honors our country’s history of progressive change.
Using a Nazi gesture, on the other hand, should be seen as disrespecting our military and our country’s ideals of equality for all. This guy should apologize to those who he’s offended as well as those who served to protect our society from hate.
Rather than getting defensive about it or say that you didn’t know what you were doing, admit that your actions were wrong and talk about how you’re going to do better. Educate yourself and share what you’re learning with friends and family who are also ignorant to world history.
Read a book—Night by Ellie Wiesel or The Diary of Anne Frank are a good place to start. Watch Schindler’s List. Very basic stuff that can educate you on what the Holocaust was like for those who endured it.
Honestly, just Google the subject and start reading. It’s not that hard and you won’t have to be the guy who pretends he didn’t know what he was doing when you make a joke that people call you out for.
Some acceptable things to say if you’re sincerely committed to progress: I didn’t realize that my gesture would make me look like all the people who do believe in it. I’m sorry for alienating all of our fans who have had enough “othering” of marginalized groups with “jokes”.
I’m never going to do that again. I’m going to educate myself on issues of inequality and I’m going to listen to people whose perspectives I have not previously listened to and considered.
“In 1946, President Harry Truman appointed an interracial committee to investigate the status of civil rights. Truman told a friend `my stomach turned, when I learned that Negro Soldiers just back from overseas were being dumped out of Army trucks in Mississippi and beaten.’”
