It will soon be impossible for y'all to see anything other than a Disney movie at a theater so y'all better watch other things while you can https://twitter.com/MinovskyArticle/status/1291754431780986880
For anyone who doesn't understand: movie theaters used to be vertically integrated meaning companies like Paramount (for which the decision was named) would create, produce and distribute films in their own theaters. Other companies either owned their own theaters...
Or had to buy time at a theater without their name. This led to the extinguishment of many smaller studios and created a few companies owning nearly all of the US film industry. They got anti-trusted and the supreme court bought them up.
What you can expect from the reversal of this decision is Disney and Amazon and maybe Universal all owning their own theaters and those being the only places where you can see those movies. It'll be a slow process but it will most likely happen
This will disproportionately affect poor and rural areas, many of which only have 1 screen theaters if any and will be even more limited. It will also give these companies nearly direct control of popular culture and reduce independent voice in film.
Could I be hyperbolizing or crying wolf? Yes, in fact I hope I am. But also; don't be surprised if this happens. Trump has been trying to reverse the Paramount decision for years and Amazon recently made a grab at AMC. You connect the dots.
Similar to independent music venues and family restaurants, independent movie theaters and even Cinemark and AMC are imperative to holding back on the film market from being strangled by a few key companies. This is a fully late stage capitalism decision and I am Sad™
