In fact there is a huge array of Gulf-funded media; Rockefeller and other foundation funded media & NGOs, and even the right wing of DSA which gestures at anti-Zionism in words but removes it from anti-imperialism
In particular, formerly openly Zionist Social Democrats will now support BDS and in effect support the wars on Iran & Syria, well aware that there is no chance of liberating Palestine when one annihilates surrounding nations which materially support resistance to Israel
We might also note that the GCC states have long adhered to the Arab Boycott of Israel while being publicly supportive of Israel’s major sponsor, the US
I don’t really think we can redefine anti-Zionism by claiming that “real” anti-Zionism requires aligning with the “right” side of these various systemic conflicts. It makes more sense to me to materially analyze the way that a verbal or even material commitment to AZ
Can go alongside pro-imperialist and pro-capitalist policies, parties, and ideologies, which is a long-standing feature of the Arab region going to the earlier portions of the 20th century
For this reason it is important to highlight that there are figures prominent on this website and US BDS work who in words and in some kind of ‘deed’ are AZ but also support the broader US agenda. That is an objective and materially supported line in US/global politics
We might also consider why some forces in Palestine defined the enemy of the Palestinian poor as world imperialism and Arab reaction.
Finally we can note that this tension runs through the Palestinian nation itself, not just on class lines but also based on parties’ internal and external bases of support.
