I was tangentially connected to Battlefield Earth -- it was one of the film financing deals I worked on when I was a baby lawyer. Absolutely the worst movie I ever worked on. https://twitter.com/awards_watch/status/1291757977251143681
Low point: it's the middle of the night, we're very close to closing the deal and transferring the $ (we represented the bank), it's a syndicated loan so there are a bunch of lawyers representing multiple banks on the call....
And one of the lawyers for one of the other banks decides that she wants to hold up the deal at 1am because there's boilerplate language -- as there was in all of our loan docs -- that warrants that the film is in English....
And she points out that there are places in the script where there's *alien* language. Because it's a sci fi movie (even if Travolta thought it was historical -- the story was the origin myth of Scientology)...
So we dick around on the phone some more with all these lawyers weigh in and finally it's decided that X lines of alien language do not violate the terms of the loan agreement. And at that point I'm thinking, "I went to law school for this?" And I went home to get some sleep. FIN
Oh and all you kids applying to law school who think you want to do entertainment law because you think it's so sexy: 😂😂😂😂😂

Seriously. It's the same paper pushing whether you're financing a movie or the construction of a bridge in Kuala Lumpur.
