It’s cliche to say that Brent Scowcroft was the best national security adviser the U.S. has ever had. But Brent Scowcroft was the best national security adviser the U.S. has ever had.
“While acknowledging that...Saddam Hussein was trying to become a threat to the region, Scowcroft, on CBS's "Face the Nation," warned that a U.S. invasion of Iraq "could turn the whole region into a cauldron and, thus, destroy the war on terrorism.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/2002/08/05/scowcroft-urges-restraint-against-iraq/5ca1c6dc-2050-4302-bdcd-a06eb0c94312/
And finally, Scowcroft warned the sages at the Aspen Security Forum in 2002 that a U.S. invasion of Iraq wouldn’t, in fact, be a cakewalk. Scowcroft was so insistent on this point that Philip Zelikow, a future Bush administration officials, thought “he was being alarmist.”
