A few weeks back I shared my love for a tiny Shanghainese noodle shop near Yonge and Finch. Since the visuals never made it online, wanted to share it here. Sang-Ji Fried Bao is about the size of a parking spot, run by a husband and wife team, with dad as sous.
Out of a tiny space they make everything from scratch for their 3 (!) item menu. Fried bao of Shanghai street food culture, wonton noodle soup, dry noodles with scallions and peanuts. Even the sauces, chile crisp are made in house. Everything is very very good.
The family invited me into the kitchen one bone-chilling winter morning, to show their process. They got hit pretty hard with the pandemic, but still open, nurtured by a tight following from the condos nearby. I love this place.
The fried soup dumplings are a must. Also, this is a great corner to eat through. Dozens of tiny shops in one block. Naniwa Taro (best okonomiyaki, takoyaki in town), Chengdu Taste for ramian & spicy noods. Topoki (Tteok-bokki), Miss Durian for desserts. All within a throw
