Coaching for understanding versus comprehension is very different.

I can say, “I want you to run from A to B.” and the player nods their heads and does it. They are understanding the instruction but not comprehending the game.
The resulting player performing the instructed action is deceiving because it may look as though they’ve ‘learned’ something but all they’ve done is learned how to follow instructions. It’s only a short term solution.
Alternatively, having them comprehend the game is much more difficult because it requires them to be able to decipher the game in the moment.

It’s done through situational coaching where the coach recreates situations (more or less variables) to allow a player to experience.
By experiencing situations a coach can observe the interactions occurring and step in to provide guidance as needed.

This takes longer but provides richer learning results.
