Who named 'Zambia'?

"I have discovered you cannot lead us to independence," Kaunda told Nkumbula.
That was the climax of the many differences in the African National Congress (ANC). Kaunda, Kapwepwe and other radicals broke away to form ZANC on 24 October 1958. Mark the date.
What to call the new nation after independence? Before the name 'Zambia' was picked, the rebels toyed with various suggestions which included Muchinga (after the long escarpment).
The proposal of 'Zambia' came after serious deliberations. Someone had suggested 'Zambesia'.

"Why don't we just call it 'Zambia'? said Kapwepwe.

So it became.

"The Independence Constitution provided that Northern Rhodesia would become a republic under the new name 'Zambia', with a president as its head of state.
"There has been a lot of speculation over the years about who coined the name 'Zambia. It was in fact Simon Kapwepwe. When, in 1958, the Zambia African National Congress was looking for a name for the country after which to name the new party, Whittington Sikalumbi, a veteran
freedom fighter, who brought up the early Portuguese name Zambezia. Kapwepwe thought that Zambezia was clumsy and shortened it to a more euphonic Zambia."

I would say Kapwepwe's intervention saved us from being confused with a province called Zambezia in. Mozambique.
