Teacher: "Have you seen Bitmoji classrooms, Bill? They are FANTASTIC. Are you going to use them?
Me: "Interesting. Why do you like them so much?"
Teacher: "They are REALLY cute. I think the kids are going to like them."
Me: "Will they help you to ensure that more students learn at higher levels in the fall?"
Teacher: "Hmmm. I'm not sure. Maybe? I think the kids will really like them!"
Me: "Of all of the steps that you can take to get ready teaching in a Pandemic, where would you rank the "bang for the instructional buck" of creating a Bitmoji Classroom?"
Teacher: "Oh -- I don't think that it is going to give me a ton of bang for the instructional buck."
(Don't chase new technologies, people. Find technologies that support the classroom practices that you believe in.)
(BTW: If this teacher had told me that she was using Bitmoji Classroom to create a sense of belonging and consistency for her students, I would have gotten on board! It is the inability to explain the purpose behind our #edtech decisions that I worry most about.)
