Given we adopted in large parts the American model of veteran-worship in this country post-2008 it is probably worth pointing out that that model is itself based on an Nixon administration attempt to split soldiers and veterans from the anti-war movement.
The idea of "hippies" spitting on returning soldiers or veterans, for example, is, according to credible research, propaganda. Closer to the truth is that the veterans were in the streets, with the "hippies", organising against the war.
For more on that read Frank Lembke's book The Spitting Image and David Cortright's book Soldiers in Revolt. Both Vietnam veterans-turned-scholars. The American Model might appeal the British militarist bloc, but evidence suggests it is based largely on wind.
