THREAD: ACCESSIBLE CYCLING: Exploring traffic-free routes in South-East Wales on an adapted bike [1/11]
As a passionate advocate for access for all it was amazing to see recent access changes on @SustransCymru NCN 8 & @RCT Church Village Community Route - there was phenomenal interest & support for this with tweets reaching twitter audiences around the world... [2/11]
...as an ex-instructor for @OutwardBoundUK & @CalvertExmoor I firmly believe in putting yourself in others shoes to know the true experience... How accessible are these routes in reality? Only one way to find out - doing it myself on an adapted bike... [3/11]
@PedalPower_Diff gave expert advice & support for planning the ride & selecting a bike. Organisations like @PedalPower_Diff & @Wheels4Well have so much insight & first-hand experience to share it is important that they are involved in cycling development at every level... [4/11]
...catching a train was the most stressful part of the journey. @PedalPower_Diff gave some great tips & there was just enough space on @tfwrail train. No space for more than one bike which raises a few questions on viability of accessible multi-modal travel... @GWRHelp [5/11]
...it is easy to forget the importance of connecting places with accessible infrastructure. Short everyday journeys can be fraught with obstacles causing great hardship - inaccessible bridges, disjointed provision, over-complicated or unsuitable design elements... [6/11]
...there is light on the horizon - Active Travel Design Guidance has accessibility embedded in its recommendations for new infrastructure - when followed the results are AMAZING!... @RCT Llantrisant Community Path being a excellent example of good practice!... [7/11]
...there is still work to do in bringing existing cycling networks & community paths up to standard - particularly with addressing the sheer range & number of access barriers that currently prevent those who stand to benefit the most from accessing these facilities... [8/11]
...working @CalvertExmoor I saw first-hand the life-changing impact that cycling can have on individuals & families... hence why the good work by @RCT in removing access barriers on the Church Village Community Path needs to continue & be reciprocated across Wales... [9/11]
...it is important to consider the routes to these traffic-free paths - can they actually be accessed from the communities that people live?... existing infrastructure, connecting routes & even temporary diversions all need to meet access standards too... [10/11]
...whilst it is important to celebrate recent progresses on improving access there is still a lot more to be done!... the new cycling networks being planned/built by @cardiffcouncil are an ideal opportunity to show how it can be done!... #PathsForEveryone ♿️🚲🚶‍♀️🛴🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👍 [11/11]
