I got a message asking me why I am so fixated on followers and boosting people so that they get more followers too. I think itâs worth exploring.

Why redistributing social capital is critical right now: a thread
- Social capital can translate to material conditions. Having followers provides opportunities that arenât available if you donât have them. You can use your platform to promote your business/work.
- In a time of economic collapse, we can nurture an online community of radical mutual aid. As more and more people face unprecedented hardship, we can share fundraisers.
-While itâs difficult for one person to donate large lump sums, we can make it a habit of all of us donating $1-5 each time we see a fundraiser circulating.
- We are facing the greatest mental health crisis this country has ever seen. Traditional mental health services are reaching their maximum limits and capacity. If someone is in a crisis, just having someone there to listen is sometimes enough to walk them away from the ledge.
- We must dismantle hierarchies wherever they are present, including social media. We cannot let a small minority of people dictate the algorithm and have their voices heard over everyone else.
- We do not often see large accounts boosting small ones. They are hoarding social capital because it benefits them to do so.
- Many comrades are isolated in conservative states. We can connect each other and even if someone is just with one other person, it may inspire enough confidence to begin to take direct action.
- We can engage in discussions and help educate each other on theory, praxis, and relevant issues. We can also help to weed out potentially destructive or counterproductive ideas to our cause.
- We can brainstorm with each other ideas for direct action, as well as increase awareness about direct action that is already happening.
