As I was preparing for my exams, while reading social and preventive medicine subject I came accross mHPI, the multi-dimensional human poverty index. Its used to determine the incidence and severity of poverty. 1/n
It makes a powerful tool by which the intensity of poverty among various regions of an area/state/nation can be compared. Initially poverty was treated as a single dimension entity based on monetary and consumption factor. Now, it's established that multiple factors cause poverty
MPI - Multi dimensional Poverty index consists of three dimensions

1. Education/Knowledge
2. Health
3. Standard of Living

3/n
These dimensions inturn have various indicators.

http://1.Education
a. Years of schooling
b. School attendance

2. Health
a.Nutrition
b.Child mortality

4/n
3. Standard of living
a. Cooking fuel
b. Electricity
c. Asset ownership
d. Water
e. Sanitation.

The score is assigned based on number of factors that are deprived . Greater the deprivation, greater the score, greater the poverty. 5/n
It was while reading this I understood the importance of various schemes of Dravidian parties. The elite claims of PDS making the individuals obese, freebies makes one lazy, freebies are given for vote could be trashed if one understands this concept of MPI. 6/n
http://1.Education  Numerous schools were opened to increase accessibility, free bus passes, community specific scholarships, first graduate scholarship, reservation, gender specific fee waiver, incentivised women education.
7/n
Drop out were discouraged by continuing the school education atleast till 8th standard by passing them as the performance pressure generated by schools is one of the main reasons for drop outs.
TN achieved a GER of 49
TN bridged the gender gap in education and employment 8/n
2. Health :

Nutrition and health were given due importance right since justice party times when mid day meal scheme was provided which not only improved the nutritional status of students but also increased literacy rate.
9/n
Incentivesed institutional delivery and ANC check up, opening up of government hospitals in every district, 24*7 functioning of PHCs, addition of eggs to mid day meal scheme which played a HUGE role in improving the nutritional status of students etc etc..

Cooking fuel :

Free gas stoves were were given. It not only improves the standard of living but also prevents women from using coal/wood as fuel which would contribute to household pollution ehich inturn would cause lung issues.

11/n
Electricity: Free electricity for farmers.
Free electricity for weavers.

12/n
Flooring/Assets:

- கலைஞர் வீடு வழங்கும் திட்டம் (Kalaingar house provision scheme)

- ஆதிதிராவிடர்களுக்கு கான்கிரீட் வீடு வழங்கும் திட்டம் (Concrete houses for aadi-dravidars)

-குடிசை மாற்று வாரியம்

- Property share for women

- TV , cycle, Laptop provision

13/n
Water:

in Villages - Overhead Tanks were created

Numerous other small projects were created by DMK

14/n
On analysing these policies, one can see that Dr. M.Karunanidhi and DMK as a whole has contributed in a major way to alleviate the poverty of TN people.

15/n
All the policies he introduced was based on humanitarian principles which inturn has scientific evidence of mobilising the mass. If not for him, I am not sure if TN would have excelled in the Health, Social and Economic indices today.

Thankyou MK.
