To the extent that Labour did better than expected, 3 reasons:
- voters wanted to send a message to Theresa May
- Brexit unified the anti Tory vote
- Labour was seen as v unlikely to win so was a risk free protest vote

Reasons for still losing: Corbyn and his policies.
Labour HQ was trying to minimise the damage you were doing to the Party they had fought for all their lives, if you consider that undermined you ask yourself what you were doing there in the first place.
