Typically, missed it yesterday, so not quite an #OTD. But anyway. On 6 August 1332 a naval force, which had departed from various English east-coast ports, landed at Kinghorn in Fife. It carried a force of English and Scottish warriors. Led by the Disinherited, men who had lost lands in the First Scottish War of Independence, they returned to claim their territories, & in the case of Edward Balliol the throne itself. [National Portrait Gallery / Public domain]
Upon landing, they were met by local levies from Fife under its earl, but the English archers, who had landed first, drove off these forces in a sharp exchange. [Andy Dolman / CC BY-SA ( https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0)]
Following this early success, the Disinherited and their forces marched to Dunfermline, burial place of Scottish kings. Here they seized stockpiled weapons and gathered funds to aid their invasion. [Tony Grist / Public domain]
