Recently I’ve been thinking more about Welsh independence. I’m not totally sold on the concept but I’d like to hear the case. Economically there would be a lot of pain to go through before anything good came of it, but could it be worth it?
I’d want to see what the Welsh economy would be based on, primarily. I want to see a model. I’d like to see a plan for a gradual distancing over, say, 20 years. Not a Brexit mark 2 clusterfuck.
The reasons I’ve started considering it when I never would have before are 1. Wales has many of the poorest areas in one of the richest countries in the world 2. England almost always elects Tories 3. Covid/Brexit have shown that the devolved nations are nothing but
An afterthought to the UK government and 4. This is a country that has been colonised, it’s language all but wiped out and it’s people denigrated, where else would tolerate that?
I just want to add to this after it got more replies than I ever thought it would (thank you, there’s some great info and I will read up on it), that I’m not actually Welsh, I’m English/Dutch but I live in Wales, my kids are Welsh and I love this country.
So I don’t know if my view counts for anything on this! It’s just something I’ve been thinking more and more about.
