Have we had any @privilegecafe_ themes on being a more effective not-bystander? We need that. This morning I feel like we white attendees should have maybe found the courage to break the implied 'rules' of the space and unmuted ourselves to intervene last night. (Thread)
I feel like we maybe let ourselves off the hook because we've become familiar with @BintMohamood being so strong and confident and it being a space she built, but I don't think it DOES let us off. She shouldn't have to be and we've heard in previous cafes that steretype does harm
We need to not be each other's attack dogs. We need to not close ranks when one of 'us' has difficult questions to answer. (ESPCIALLY when we've just had a free classroom on how such group closure forms and is maintained!)
We need to disconnect ourselves from the over simplification that because sonandso is not A Racist that they therefore are free of all responsibility for harmful structures within the organisations hey preside over.
Yes answering hard questions is emotional labour. But so is dancing around to find words/tone that won't hurt white people's feelings. And given the state of society/history it is morally right & proper that white Welsh in the #IndyWales space do that work not palm it off.
We need to be brave and resilient and deal with the fact that TRYING doesn't excuse us from criticism if we get it wrong. Dealing with criticism with grace and responsiveness that gives us the chance to try again - not trying once and throwing a pwd when told 'that wasn't great'.
And we def can't go throwing a pwd on behalf of someone not even present! That's a WAY worse look than a disciplinary process that needs attention and some mildly flustered seeming answers. If the lady in question thought her outburst made us look LESS racist it was a big fail.
