This week is Homelessness Week and I have been out of homelessness for 18 months (Yay!). I want to draw attention to some things about youth homelessness of marginalised people in Australia (thread). #HW2020
* First Nations people are 14 times more likely to experience homelessness than non-Indigenous people
* 22% of transgender and gender diverse people aged 14 to 25 report experiencing accommodation issues and homelessness
* 22% of transgender and gender diverse people aged 14 to 25 report experiencing accommodation issues and homelessness
* 51% of LGB young people, and 71% of gender diverse young people aged 14 to 21 don’t live at home with family - this is usually the result of unaccepting parents.
* Around 1 in 12 people who use specialist homelessness services have disability
* Around 1 in 12 people who use specialist homelessness services have disability
Also let’s stop the stigma around homelessness. Stop calling homeless people "lazy" or "bludgers". I didn't get out of homelessness because I "worked hard", I got lucky and so many others don't. Stable housing is a basic need that everyone deserves.
Being lucky and receiving stable, affordable housing was what led to me being able to work hard and to excel at uni and in life... not the other way around.
Huge thank you to all the organisations, charities and individuals who are working in this area and for those who support people like me to get to where I'm at now. This is such important work. We need more support for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
