Finally, the latest @MekongReview is here. Bringing this issue to life was the hardest thing I've done. It wasn't just the coronavirus, the business lockdown, or the financial risk involved, the hardest part was holding out against the atmosphere of censorship creeping into Asia.
First, we had writers pulling out, fearing consequences. Then there was the issue of printers refusing to do business with you. Last, in our case, police stopping the printer from printing the mag. This happened in HK, under the menacing shadow of the new #NationalSecurityLaw
But we prevailed in the end. Thanks to everyone who helped out - writers, artists, photographers, booksellers. Unfortunately the print version of the magazine is available only in HK; @bleakhousebooks, ACO and Kubrick. Print subscribers will get their copy, but pls be patient.
Just want to add, last time printers refused to print us was in Hun Sen's Cambodia. Question: why do powerful men with tanks and guns at their disposal fear a little literary magazine with a tiny readership? This gives us hope.
