We commissioned some baseline data and analysis on Northampton's first (and currently only) Emergency Active Travel Fund scheme. Here are the results /1
The data was collected on the stretch of St James' Road between Stenson Street and Marlborough Road.

We felt it necessary because we were almost certain that no one else would be monitoring and evaluating the scheme /2
To be clear, we are in favour of the bus lane being made into 24 hour operation. We fully support all modes of public transport.

What we are yet to convinced by is @mycountycouncil's claim that the scheme is primarily for the benefit of cyclists /3
The bus lane from Sixfields to the town centre is intermittent at best, and does not even attempt to tackle any of the more difficult issues such as junctions.

It therefore provides little encouragement to new cyclists let alone provide increased safety to anyone on a bicycle /4
As this photo shows, there is an enormous amount of space where a much more ambitious fully segrerated scheme could've been put in place /5 https://twitter.com/CriticalMassNN/status/1291282408638226432?s=19
We sincerely hope that as the scheme beds in, coupled with strict enforcement of the bus lane, there will be a decrease in driver violation and increase in cycling /6 https://twitter.com/CriticalMassNN/status/1291102403811520513?s=19
We also look forward to seeing the continued official monitoring of the scheme by the relevant authorities going forward /7
