This is a Venn diagram of all the major religions of the world made from a Hindu perspective. I have omitted some religions like that of Parsis. Please save it and share it widely. I define and explain all the circles in this diagram in this thread below.
1. The Indic Religions : It's a broad category of religions that originate in the Indian subcontinent. Some common features of these religions are reverence for cows, belief in reincarnation & worship of icons or idols.
2. The Abrahmic religions : As the name suggests,it's the set of religions derived from Abraham. There are 3 major ones.Some common features of these religions are beleving in a singular god,hating idolatry,having prophets,mosaic distinction & being a reaction to an earlier cult.
3. Core Hinduism : This is the Hinduism we most usually identify with the word Hindu. It's the world oldest surviving religion. Some defining features being following the Vedic scriptures,practicing idolatry,cow worship,keeping the sacred Agni & belief in Karma & reincarnation.
4. Judaism : It is the oldest of the major Abrahmic religions. It is the only Abrahmic religion which is also ethnic in nature. Some defining features are montheism, belief in Toras, belief in the teachings of Moses, hatred against idolatry & male circumcision.
5. Christianity : It is the most followed Abrahamic religion. One unique feature of it is that it appropriates pagan religions easily & uses for its spread. Defining features are belief in one God (Yahweh),the original sin, Jesus being son of God and the Bible.
6. Islam : It's the newest,the most refined & the fastest growing Abrahmic religion. It has spread more due to violence than through preaching. Defining features are belief that there is no God but Allah & Mohammad being the last prophet & hating idolatry.
7. Buddhism : It is an Indic religion based on the teachings of Siddharth Gautam. It heavily uses Hindu iconography. Defining features are vague & can be crisped into following the teachings of Buddha. Over time it has drifted away from Hinduism & can hardly be called even Indic.
8. Jainism : It is the religion based on the teachings of Mahavira Jain. It also heavily uses Hindu iconography. Over time it has been almost fully Hinduised. Some parts can be impossible to separate even from core Hinduism. Otherwise it's totally Indic.
9. Sikhism : It's the religion based on the teachings of Guru Nanak & his nine successors. Over time it has drifted away from Hinduism & even adopted some parts form Islam. Some parts are in core Hinduism, some in Indic region, some outside Indic region & some even in Islam.
10. Arya Samaj : It is more of a sect than a religion. It's based on the teachings of Dayanand Saraswati & believes only in the Vedas & rejects Puranas & idolatry. Some parts of it have been totally Hinduised. Otherwise it is totally in the Indic region.
11. Brahmo Samaj : It is a now almost totally dead cult based on the teachings of Ram Mohan Roy. It has nothing in common with Hinduism & parts of it are completely derived from Christianity like monotheism & hatred against idolatry.
