As many have noted, TikTok and WeChat collect a lot of data—but not significantly more or different data than American tech companies. The key difference for privacy lies in government access to data. The question isn’t so much which company you trust, but which government.
Cutting off apps due simply to national origin will change the future of the global internet. We may be moving towards a Splinternet where different countries have access to different networks.
