Amul has a long history of political invasion to tell. The milk federation was by all means apolitical, but its historical link to India's struggles & survival, & a perceived propinquity to grand old party created a hurdle for its growth when Cong lost north/west bastions (1/n) https://twitter.com/Amul_Coop/status/1290975489159393283
For many years, all the cooperatives under Amul were run by Congress leaders. Farmers being a massive vote-bank, political parties found Amul to be a powerful vehicle for them. History tells us that for a long time, Amul cooperatives resisted the invasion by BJP.
Amul, which strived to make inroads into neighbouring states, initially faced a big roadblock from BJP, esp in UP.
Modi, while in Guj, never bothered to look at Amul. He didn't even pay last respects to Verghese Kurien when he died, despite coming to just 15km off Anand that day
Things are very different at Amul today. Almost all cooperatives are run by BJP... and Cong is just a shadow of what it was in Gujarat 3 decades ago.
Once a Cong baby, Amul is now an adult in saffron wear
