With this Trump presidential order banning transactions with #TikTok and owner #ByteDance + #WeChat and owner #Tencent what’s the scope of the impact on these businesses? Eg it’s not a ban #US citizens in #China using Wechat pay is it?
Will it mean for example that Apple’s App Store can no longer host WeChat and TikTok? Meaning you couldn’t get these apps onto your iPhone? What if Apple hosts these apps for free? #China #USA
BTW I can’t see what #China’s like-for-like retaliatory move is on this one. All the equivalent #US apps are already blocked here.
When you think it through, no Wechat on Apple devices in #China totally kills the China market for Apple. It’d be huge. BTW this requirement to use the “App Store” to get apps onto your Apple device, is part of the problem. It’s also made it easy for #Beijing to get apps blocked.
Cutting off access to Wechat would have an enormous impact on #US #China connections. Not only does everyone in China use it, everyone with a link to China also uses it. It’s all pervasive here with unthinkable surveillance powers on the entire population: https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/blogs-china-blog-48552907
