Do not know how to break it to you, but God is holy, folks. This is, in fact, a big deal.
Lev. 19:2: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.
Been working on that verse today and, man, we could wrestle with the demands of Leviticus 19 and what it means to be God's people for our whole lives.

Actually, while I'm here, I'll just tell you to go to Leviticus 19. See what God says our holiness should be.
Loyalty to God alone.
Honoring parents.
Worshipping God rightly according to his Word.

Go down the line and you'll find it to be a restatement of the 10 commandments. But it's fleshed out to be all-encompassing for Israel's social, political, and religious life.
You've got the gleaning laws, commands to care for and not oppress the sojourner. You've got prohibitions against sexual sin and impurity. And, of course, the biggie, you've got the Love Command--yes, the Jesus one (Lev. 19:18).
All of it, every single aspect is governed by God's call to respond to his holiness the covenant Lord who saved them, with a corresponding holiness--a life marked out from the nations the way God is marked out from the false gods of the nations.
Also, this is not a just an OT thing, but an NT thing. 1 Peter 1:16--this is still the calling of the people of God. God's people are to be distinct in our worship, our economics, our pursuit of justice, our sexual practices--all of it. Holy.
