So I finally had what was, for me anyway, a very uncomfortable talk with my immediate boss. I'm glad they appreciate me and all but I've been there almost three years and there isn't many options for moving up other than the ones I'm trying to create for myself. /1
There is slow progress there but I've been level 1 tech support for three years because we only have level 1 tech support and I know for a fact I'm making at least $2+/hour less than my boss did with the same time and similar if not smaller but different workload. /2
So we had a money talk. I had talking about money. As long as bills get paid I just don't care but I kind of have to start caring. We ended up finding out there was only level 1 tech support because until my boss was made tech support manager there technically never was one /3
And so there was never any other tech support options. So he says he's going to talk to CTO about adding levels and bumping me to Sr. Tech Support as a way of justifying a wage renegotiation rather than a raise which is capped at a certain percentage. We'll see how it goes... /4
But the larger - wide scale point here is this: even though it is or may be uncomfortable try not to dismiss the option of sitting down and having a money talk if you feel you need one. I flat out told him I feel I deserve more and he agreed. That may not be the case but... /5
You may also find out there is some small step needed to make it possible (such as defining job roles/job duties to enable a pay bump that might not be an option otherwise). Value yourself enough to speak - even when you're afraid. /end
