It's obvious #AEW has certainly had missteps in its women's wrestling division. But it's also extremely irrational to expect a startup promotion to waltz on national television and be a hit in every department within less than a year. (Thread)
The fact is, #WWE has elevated women's wrestling on a mainstream global platform (which is great), and the expectations are sky-high for quality and presence. It has normalized it on the big stage. But if this were six years ago, we wouldn't be having this conversation. #AEW
The reality is, it took #WWE having a developed farm system in #NXT to ultimately produce its top female talent, and the women's presence was greatly aided by an existing, major crossover platform: Total Divas. #AEW, nor any other major North American promotion, has this.
Before that, there hadn't been serious investment in a #WWE women's division since the 80s. So to cyberbully a woman in power for having the belief that there are women out there who don't prioritize women's wrestling is ridiculous, because this was reality not long ago. #AEW
Some female MLB fans don't care for pro softball. And on the other hand, there are female WNBA fans who don't care for the NBA. Pro wrestling is for EVERYONE in 2020, just about anybody can find their own niche. Now it's #AEW's turn to craft female stars that EVERYONE invests in.
And surely, #AEW can do a better job at promoting some of the women. Advertise the women's tournament going on over on YouTube. But most of the talent don't have an issue with them getting their platform, it appears. My point: cliché, but Rome wasn't built in a day.
Ultimately, it's a GREAT thing people care so passionately about women's wrestling to have these conversations, and to be passionate about wanting women's wrestlers to be treated as major attractions. But it's going to take time for #AEW to develop that.
I spoke to someone behind the scenes recently in #AEW, and despite what many may think, they recognize their imperfections. Heck, Jim Ross addresses them often on his podcast. But it's a marathon, not a sprint.
