Writing will not save you (easily)
So many people think if they leave their successful careers as an actuary/financial consultant/teacher, writing will make them happy. It will not, even if it's the only thing worth doing. The thing that will make you happy is to grow into being human.
Become a writer if you want to understand more about yourself and about the world. But don't expect to like what you see reflected back.
I'm saying this because so many people who talk to me about writing are unhappy — they are looking for meaning. We are all unhappy! Everyone (including writers) is on a quest for a kind of redemption.
The pandemic has heightened this. Life is short! If you were gone tomorrow, what would it all amount to? (I am thinking this.)
Put writing in its proper place — it is a tool. It's a tool for understanding life. Ideally, we do it to make a world more beautiful for others.
