Long before COVID many universities were already charging similar rates for their online courses as they were for in person.

I used to cynically assume this was just a way for unis to make $ and then I had to put my own course online. The reality: It is a TON of work. /2
Simple components like in-class dialogue suddenly required several steps to plan and execute.

Moving my existing course online probably took 2x as long as prepping a brand-new course.

To be clear, I do think we need a broader convo about college costs and whether we want higher ed to be an equalizer to follow the current trend of becoming a luxury product for the upper middle class & the wealthy (I want the former) /4 https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/05/scott-galloway-future-of-college.html
But this is a much larger conversation. Among other things, it would require reversing a state-level disinvestment in public colleges that has been occurring for decades.

What might a model of cheap college look like?

Let me share some comparative numbers about #BYU /5
According to Google, the avg private university tuition is $36,800/year.

By comparison 20/21 #BYU tuition is $5970/year for Latter-Day Saint students and $11,940/year for non Latter-Day Saint students. /6 https://finserve.byu.edu/students-parents/tuition-fees-deadlines#richtext-2020-2021-tuiti
