Appropriation comes down to one thing, whether or not a community claims you, you don't need to have grown up there, but you need a connection, if you don't have one, what are we really talking about here?
Particularly with native ppls, who've been deliberately misrepresented for centuries (to gloss over that whole genocide thing) and continue to get misrepresented and displaced in lieu of more convenient narratives. Positivity stories, pity porn, anything but NDN's repping NDNs.
You get tired of this shit honestly, I've been doing it for 20 years, watching non natives get ahead telling native stories about shit they know fuck all about.
The best part tho, is catching static for being a rez born and bred storyteller DEEP in fucking know and being told that your stories don't conform to the ideology set up by these fuck wits that came before you.
Do know how many time I've been called racist by gatekeepers because the indians in my stories act like they grew up on an actual reserve opposed to being raised by a couple of white native studied professors, cause I've lost fucking count.
Some of the biggest funding organizations in canada, jesus, if I could share the notes on blood quantum and the colony and file under miscellaneous and rhymes calling me racist because of the rez rats running around in my world... like it matters I guess.
I've been doing this for decades and I've been running in place, I've watched non natives get admitted into the academy, catch disney movies, all because they tell movies white ppl want to see. It's destroyed my moral and my will.
Appropriation is real, and when your pitching stories and constantly get told you're not representing the place you grew up accurately by people who've never been there, it becomes destructive.
